If you were to see 28-year-old James Dunn today, you would never fathom that he once weighed close to 450 lbs. After being denied entry on a ride at Alton Towers amusement park due to his large frame, the Liverpool father decided it was time for a change — a 232 lb change.

“It was mortifying, it was so embarrassing. There was tons of people watching and I just couldn’t ever face going back again,” Dunn told the Liverpool Echo.

Seeing an advertisement for a TV show that promised to help turn people’s lives around, he applied and won a spot on Davina McCall’s “Make My Body Better.”

The first order of business was to get Dunn gastric bypass surgery, a procedure that shrinks your stomach to around a quarter of its original size. That forced Dunn to give up his troublesome eating and snacking routines.

“I’d always skip breakfast, and then for lunch I’d have pasties, sausage rolls, white bread and I’d drink sugary drinks. Then about four times a week I’d have takeaways, I’d eat whatever was convenient, and it would always be in huge portions that just weren’t normal. I’d eat pizzas, Chinese, Indian, but not a portion that a normal person would eat. They’d always be massive portions,” he says.

As part of the show, he was connected with personal trainer Mark Grice, who Dunn really credits for making the most drastic changes in his body (and his life). Even after he’d lost a big chunk of the weight, Grice encouraged him to keep working and the two even competed in a triathlon together.

They now travel to schools to talk to kids about childhood obesity.

“I’d always been overweight even as a child and I think the best way to combat it is to tackle it while you’re young. We need to educate them at a young age.”

Now at a much healthier weight of 210 lbs, Dunn not only looks, but feels like a changed man.

“This just creeped me right out,” Dunn said in a Facebook post citing an article telling his story.
