During last year's shifts in the way fast-food restaurants operate, Subway was among those that trimmed their menu to simplify operations. But less is known about what was happening behind the scenes with the chain's footprint, and how many locations, if any, the company had to close down permanently in order to cut their losses.According to Restaurant Business, that number was quite high. The industry publication alleges Subway closed down as many as 10% of their restaurants, which would amount to a number between 2,200 and 2,400. When asked for a comment, the chain refused to provide a specific number of locations closed but stated that the number of permanent closures was lower than this estimate. (Related: 100 Unhealthiest Foods on the Planet.)"Subway does not disclose this information, but we can tell you that the figure you provided is not accurate," the company said in an emailed statement to Restaurant Business. "The number of permanent closures in 2020 is lower than your estimate, as there are temporary closures due to COVID."Despite a steady decline in the number of locations in recent years, Subway is still the largest restaurant chain in the United States (and the world!) based on footprint. The company started 2020 with close to 24,000 domestic locations and over 41,000 in total worldwide. While Subway has built its success on an aggressive growth strategy, their biggest pain points have been the restaurants located in urban areas and in malls, two places that have suffered significant reductions in foot traffic over the last year. Whatever the actual number of shuttered Subway restaurants is, the majority have most likely taken place in these markets.Don't forget to sign up for our newsletter to get the latest restaurant news delivered straight to your inbox.

The restaurant scene in Washington, D.C. is rife with presidential tradition. Some establishments are considered to be standard-bearers when it comes to feeding presidents, like the Old Ebbitt Grill, which is located a block from the White House and has hosted everyone from Ulysses S. Grant to Theodore Roosevelt. Then, there are the hip, new restaurants, like Georgia Brown's, where the Obamas were known to eat out on date night.Former President Trump, however, was perhaps the first president who didn't explore the vibrant culinary scene of his adopted hometown. According to the Washingtonian, Trump only visited one DC restaurant during his four years in office: BLT Prime, the steakhouse at his Pennsylvania Avenue hotel.RELATED: McDonald's Is Making These 8 Major UpgradesAccording to the magazine, Trump would always order the same thing: Shrimp cocktail, fries, and a well-done steak. But, he did seem open to venturing outside of his own hotel to dine, at least at one point. In a radio interview from 2017, he said that he was looking forward to branching out and trying some of the local restaurant offerings."In Washington, you do have some great restaurants, and I'm going to start going to them," Trump said to the Larry O'Connor Show. "Well, when I leave the White House, which is seldom, I always go to my hotel on Pennsylvania Avenue, and they say, 'He should go to other places.' And I never thought of it. And I'm going to start doing that. I'm going to go around."That said, it doesn't seem like his plan ever came to fruition (and it should be noted that the COVID-19 pandemic has also made it much more difficult to dine out in 2020). On the other hand, the former president's love of fast-food was much better documented than his affinity for any of the local restaurants. There was the famous White House reception for the Clemson Tigers football team catered by McDonald's, and Trump himself had been known to send out for some burgers and milkshakes. With his presidential run now over, the 45th president may have missed his chance to dine in the footsteps of the political elite.Don't forget to sign up for our newsletter to get the latest restaurant news delivered straight to your inbox.
