Nearly 7.5 million Americans have contracted the coronavirus — more than 210,000 of them have died. Experts say the death rate could rise to 2,900 people per day by the end of December, yet Donald Trump is telling his constituents not to fear COVID-19.

The absurdity of this response is highlighted by the fact that the president himself was hospitalized after contracting the virus and treated to top medical care, including an experimental antibody therapy that is not yet available to the public. In the early days of the pandemic, some patients were turned away from hospitals due to overcrowding.

Anyway, the reaction to the president’s tweet was strong and overwhelmingly negative. Mandy Moore was one of the voices condemning Trump’s message, tweeting, “Don’t be afraid of covid? Tell that to the 210,000 families who have lost loved ones. To the Black, Brown and Indigenous folks disproportionately affected. With tens of millions of jobs lost and the economy tanked. Many of us isolated for months. You’re the cruelest. #votehimout."

Padma Lakshmi called out Trump’s hypocrisy by sharing a tweet from 2014 in which he called an Ebola doctor “very SELFISH” for spreading the disease in N.Y. after traveling to West Africa.

“Don’t be afraid of Covid?!” Chris Evans wrote. “You’ve been under round-the-clock care by the best doctors using the best drugs. Do you really think everyone has access to that?! Sadly, I’m sure you’re aware of that disparity, you just don’t care This is reckless to a shocking degree, even for you.”

“‘Don’t be afraid of Covid’ he dares say to those of us who have lost loved ones to Covid,” Ava DuVernay tweeted. “This man is evil.”

“Children have lost their parents,” Barbra Streisand reminded followers. “Mothers and fathers are gone! How dare he say such a stupid thing.”

Myriad other public figures voiced their outrage and incredulity as well:
