Mandy Moore says divorce from Ryan Adams 'never affected' how she felt about love

Mandy Moore just knew.

The This Is Us actress reveals in an interview with Michigan Avenue magazine that she always believed in love, even when her first marriage to singer-songwriter Ryan Adams ended.

Moore married Adams in 2009, and the pair split in 2015. She accused him of being controlling and psychologically abusive during their relationship in a February New York Times story. He denied it.

Despite her experience, Moore said she was confident that she’s find someone like Taylor Goldsmith, the Dawes singer-songwriter she married in November.

“It was inevitable — it was always what was going to happen,” Moore said of her marriage to Goldsmith. “I was like, ‘Oh, this is what it’s supposed to be like. This is how life is supposed to unfold.’”

She was all in on the relationship from its earliest stages, when they first connected over Instagram over her love for his band, in 2015.

Moore said she didn’t hold back in her new relationship.

“I was very hungry. I was not apprehensive at all,” Moore said. “I knew that past situations didn’t define me and didn’t even define what love or marriage or relationships or any of that had to be. My experiences in the past were singular to that. I knew, even before I met Taylor, I would love again, and I would get married again, and I would have a family. And all the things I always hoped for and wanted, I still believed were out there and possible. Not to say that I didn’t have my own grief and pain and trauma to tend to, deal with, overcome and heal from, but it never affected how I feel about love.”

Moore is feeling optimistic about her career at this moment, too.

“I know this is an extraordinary time, and I am present,” she said. “I’m literally devouring every morsel of it and appreciating it for what it is because I remember when times did not feel the same.”

In fact, the actress and singer has goals to do even more, starting with music, although she doesn’t offer specifics.

“I just want to take stock of all of it and do what I love,” Moore said. “This moment isn’t gonna last forever. I want to really dig my heels in while I can.”
