‘The Irishman': Less Than 20% Finished Scorsese Epic in Its First 24 Hours on Netflix

Were you unable to finish all of “The Irishman” on its first day? If so, you’re weren’t the only one.

The latest Martin Scorsese mob epic, clocking in at 3 hours and 29 minutes, was watched in its entirety by 751,000 U.S. viewers in the 24 hours following its Netflix debut, according to new data shared by Nielsen on Friday. That comes out to only 18% of viewers who started watching the movie that were able to complete it within its first day.

Still, that actually compares favorably to other major Netflix releases, despite its lengthy runtime. The 18% completion rate was the same for Sandra Bullock’s “Bird Box,” and better than the 11% of viewers who started and finished “El Camino,” the recent “Breaking Bad” flick, in its first day.

The day after Thanksgiving turned out to be the best time to chill on the couch and churn out the whole movie, with 930,000 U.S. viewers watching all of “The Irishman” last Friday, per Nielsen.

The movie, starring Robert De Niro as mob hitman Frank Sheeran, alongside longtime screen buddy Joe Pesci and Al Pacino as Jimmy Hoffa, has earned rave reviews from critics, including from our own Alonso Duralde. And while there have been a fair share of complaints about how long it is, most fans seem to have enjoyed it, too, with “The Irishman” sporting an 86% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Altogether, the movie was watched by 13.2 million U.S. viewers in its first five days, according to Nielsen. Netflix, which hasn’t shared its own data yet, will likely report a different figure than Nielsen; the streaming giant counts a view as any account that has completed 70% of a movie or show.
