Academy Award winner and bestselling author Matthew McConaughey appeared on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Wednesday night and addressed the rumors that had been swirling that he was considering a run for governor of Texas. A day earlier, it began circulating that McConaughey was considering a run, and the story quickly spread. When Colbert brought it up, McConaughey couldn’t help but laugh, and he gave a somewhat definitive answer.

“I have no plans to do that right now,” McConaughey said when asked by Colbert. “Right now, no. I don’t get politics. Politics seems to be a broken business. Politics needs to redefine its purpose. And so, as I move forward in life, yes, am I gonna consider leadership roles where I can be most useful? I’d love to. I’m doing that regardless.”

In recent years, McConaughey has teamed up with Wild Turkey, the bourbon company of which he is creative director, and done charitable work outside of politics. He has taken part in handing out thousands of turkeys to families in need before Thanksgiving, and this year, as part of their With Thanks initiative, McConaughey and Wild Turkey are shining a light on ordinary people doing extraordinary things to help their communities through the coronavirus pandemic.

As for the rumors about his political ambitions, McConaughey said he’d just seen an article on the subject an hour before the interview, and chalks it up not giving a clear enough answer when asked a potential gubernatorial gig, which he says has happened a lot recently. But he reiterated that, at least for now, it’s not happening.

“Whatever leadership role I can be most useful in, and I don’t see that that’s politics,” McConaughey said. “Right now, I don’t see it as politics.”

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on CBS.
