Matthew McConaughey Explained Why He Never Dated His Co-Stars

A look at Matthew McConaughey's IMDb page doesn't just offer up a peek at his proclivity for rom-coms, it also offers a long list of very famous co-stars. During an appearance on SiriusXM's The Howard Stern Show, McConaughey claimed that he never once dated his co-stars while they were working, saying that he never set to do it on purpose and just that "it organically just happened."

McConaughey's co-stars include Kate Hudson, Sandra Bullock, Jennifer Lopez, and Penélope Cruz (who he did end up dating after they met on the set of Sahara, not while they were working on a project together). He told Stern that smoking-hot on-screen chemistry doesn't come easy when actors are dating off-screen — and it shows.

"If you look at the history of films, when you see a couple — say they did a movie together and then, later on, they get married, and they make another movie together. Watch the movie! When they're really good is the movie before it was ever public that they're getting together," he said. "But once they get married, you watch that movie, they're not near as good together. It's the movie when they met that you go, 'That's the one [where] this thing is sizzlin'."

But McConaughey insisted that he definitely thought about it. It just didn't end up happening. He admitted to having crushes on his co-stars and mentioned that the feelings may have been mutual. However, respect ended up overruling emotions.

"I've always tried to keep it professional and the people I've worked with I must say did as well," he said. "Maybe we had certain crushes on each other at certain times, but we always just kind of kept it professional. Or maybe we were dating somebody seriously outside of ourselves at the time and we both respected that for the other."

McConaughey ended up marrying Camila Alves in 2012, way after his fling with Cruz and long after his love affair (begrudging or not) with rom-coms.
