Meet Andie, the One-Piece Swimsuit Line You Are Going to Love

Remember the name “Andie,” because it is about to become your one-stop shop for the perfect one-piece swimsuit.

The brand, which hopes to do for bathing suits what Warby Parker has done for eyeglasses, is built on a direct-to-consumer business model and houses a tight, curated swim selection. Because there is no middleman, the suits get shipped directly to your doorstep, saving you the trouble of fussing around in a store.

Prior to launching, Andie’s team surveyed more than 500 women to identify key market issues. Among their findings was a stressful shopping experience, quality/fit issues, high prices, and the lack of one-piece swimsuits on the market, compared to myriad bikini options.

To remedy these issues, the Andie team worked to create three cuts that are flattering to a diverse range of body types and also fill the gap for quality suits at a fair price. The brand aims to keep things simple by offering only three one-piece styles — no bikinis — in modern, classic silhouettes and in just three neutral shades: black, navy, and white. It allows consumers avoid a trend-driven suit that will likely be out of fashion by next year.

The swimsuits are all made in a woman-owned factory in the heart of downtown Los Angeles with material — a quick-drying, chlorine-resistant blend of spandex and nylon — sourced from North Carolina.

So how does it work?

Step 1: Go online and select your size.

Step 2: Pay a (refundable) deposit of $19. This is to make sure you’re a real person and to prevent fraud.

Step 3: Receive a small, white, neatly packaged box in the mail containing Andie’s three classic swim styles, in all three colors, in your desired size — with options running from XS to XL.

Step 4: Try them on (don’t worry, there’s a sanitary paper protector in each crotch). Only keep what you love and return the rest. The swimsuits are priced on an incentive scale — meaning the more you keep, the less you pay. Prices are $125 for one suit, $115 each for two, and $105 each for all three. The $19 deposit will be deducted from the remaining cost or refunded altogether if you keep none.

If you’re wondering if this works like a subscription box, the answer is: not at all. There’s no commitment here. So you’ve really got nothing to lose. Amazing, right?

Andie Founders Melanie + Tess

Andie was founded by Melanie Travis and Tess De Paula, who combined Travis’s expertise in tech startups and subscription boxes (through her work with Foursquare, Kickstarter, and Bark & Co.) with De Paula’s skill in brand strategies (honed at Kiehl’s and L’Oréal) and business management, which she acquired as chief of staff to the president at Lancôme.

“Buying swimsuits can be an incredibly emotional and vulnerable experience for women,” the duo states in a press release about the company. “It’s the garment that’s the most personal, so there’s an emotional connection that really resonates. We wanted to create a swimwear brand that makes women feel secure and understood, while delivering exceptional quality.”
