Chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, this year’s Golden Globes Ambassador, Isan Elba, is using her platform to raise awareness about mental health.
The 17-year-old daughter of Hollywood heavyweight Idras Elba will be handing out trophies in front of millions of people Sunday evening – and she’s using the opportunity for an issue close to her heart.
In support of her mother Hanne “Kim” Norgaard’s mental health battle, Isan is partnering with the Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation. The HFPA will donate $50,000 USD on the teen’s behalf, according to Refinery29. Isan’s mother struggles with bipolar depression, depression, and chronic anxiety.
“It was only about two years ago that my mum opened up to me,” Isan told People at the Golden Globe Ambassador luncheon. “I’m not going to lie, it’s a struggle every day. It’s a learning lesson for me, but it’s hard. Mental health is something that’s hard to deal with. We just sat down and talked about it, and I think that was better for her, talking about it and talking about it with someone who means the most in her life, and just getting that out.”
Isan says this is just the beginning for her and her advocacy for mental health.
“After this, I will still continue to advocate for mental health,” she said to Variety, “in the African-American community and among teenagers, because I’m both, and it’s such taboo in both communities.”
As for any advice for for her stint as Golden Globes Ambassador? Dad Idras texted the teen a simple message: “Do good.”
