How Meghan Markle's First Solo Engagement Compares with Kate Middleton's
Over the course of her relationship with Prince Harry, the Duchess of Sussex has had several royal firsts, some more significant than others. To name a few, she's made her first engagement with the Queen and given her first interview as a member of the family. And today marks her first solo engagement.
While last week, Meghan introduced her first solo initiative, the charity cookbook Together, which is raising funds for the Hubb Community Kitchen, she had her mom and her husband by her side at the official launch.This evening, Meghan is fully on her own at the Royal Academy of Arts, helping to open an exhibit of works from the region of Oceania. She just arrived at the event wearing a tea-length black dress by Givenchy paired with a small black clutch and black heels.
This evening, The Duchess of Sussex is attending the opening of @royalacademy’s exhibition, Oceania.

Meghan's first solo engagement will be very similar to her sister-in-law Duchess Kate's; however, Meghan had a bit likely had a bit more time to prepare.

In October of 2011, six months after her wedding to Prince William, Kate attended her first solo event, a private dinner at Clarence House in support of Prince Charles's charity In Kind Direct, an organization which helps coordinate in-kind donations between companies and non-profits that might be able to use the goods.
Charles was initially supposed to appear at the party himself, but according to the Telegraph, he was called away to "present condolences to the Saudi Royal Family following the death of the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia." So Kate filled in.
The Duchess wore a gray formal gown with elaborate straps to the dinner and was photographed mingling with guests.
According to a Palace aid, ''She was so pleased that her first solo engagement was for the Prince of Wales, who has shown her so much support over the years.''
At the time, Robin Boles, chief executive of In Kind Direct said, "The Duchess hosted a very special evening with absolute professionalism and charm."
We're sure the curators and executives of the Royal Academy of Art would say the same of Meghan today.
