Meghan Markle channels 'My Fair Lady' in Givenchy dress at Royal Ascot

Meghan Markle finally got her My Fair Lady moment.

The newly minted duchess joined Prince Harry for the opening day of Royal Ascot, the legendary horse race in England that’s arguably best known for the iconic black-and-white outfit worn by Audrey Hepburn‘s Eliza Doolittle in a racing scene from the 1964 musical My Fair Lady.

While it’s hard to top Hepburn, the duchess certainly didn’t disappoint as she joined the royal family for a day out at the races.

In keeping with the annual event’s notoriously strict dress code — which this year approved jumpsuits but banned fascinators, strapless styles, and the off-the-shoulder necklines of which our American duchess is so fond — Meghan wore a tasteful black-and-white look of her own. And who else would design it but her favorite fashion house, Givenchy — a brand that Hepburn helped put on the map?

While her husband went the traditional route, in a top hat and tails, the duchess opted for a collared, button-down dress in ivory, which featured a black belt. In keeping with the event’s insistence that all hemlines fall to at least the knee, the chic yet conservative number fell safely in the midi category, with pantyhose worn underneath.

Meghan accessorized with black heels, plus a sculptural white hat by Philip Treacy featuring black trim and a bow detail. Her hair was worn in an elegant bun at the back, with her makeup kept soft and natural.

The couple weren’t the only royals on hand. Queen Elizabeth led a royal procession that included Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, Princess Anne, and Harry’s cousins Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.
