Meghan Markle's estranged father has wished the duchess a "successful birth", in his first comments since she won her court case and announced her pregnancy.

Thomas Markle Snr said he wanted to meet his grandchildren one day, in comments to The Sun.

He said: "I wish Meghan and Harry a successful and healthy birth. And I hope some day I get to see my grandchildren.”

He added: “They’re all royal grandchildren.”

Markle Snr was meant to walk his daughter down the aisle in May 2018 when she married Prince Harry, but was unable to fly because of health problems.

The relationship between Meghan and Markle Snr has been well documented since then, after he gave interviews to news programmes asking her to get in touch with him.

A letter she wrote to him in the months after her wedding to Prince Harry became the centre of a legal battle after extracts of it were printed in the Mail On Sunday and MailOnline.

Meghan, 39, sued the paper's publisher Associated Newspapers Ltd for breach of privacy and copyright and won her claim in the High Court, without the matter needing to go to a full trial.

Had a trial taken place, she would have given evidence, as would Markle Snr. He had already expressed his desire to give evidence, but a judge said no different judgement would have been made if there had been a trial.

Adding of the court case, Markle Snr said: "I don’t know how you can judge a case without getting testimony from witnesses. Witnesses that want to speak. I’m not the only one who wants to speak."

Meghan and Harry now live close to her mother Doria Ragland, and have bought their forever home in Santa Barbara, California.

The couple are planning an interview with Oprah Winfrey in which the duchess will discuss marriage, motherhood and philanthropy before being joined by the duke to talk about their future plans.
