The arrival of Meghan Markle into the Royal Family has had a huge impact on the monarchy.

When she married Prince Harry in May, Meghan broke the mould. The former American actress has had a Hollywood career and divorced her first husband, Trevor Engelson, after two years of marriage in 2013.

Divorce has been a touchy subject for the royals since the Queen’s uncle, Edward, abdicated in 1936 to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson; the Queen’s younger sister Margaret was not allowed to wed Peter Townsend for the same reason.

But Meghan and Harry’s relationship has captured the public’s imagination – particularly after she successfully navigated her way through her first royal tour in Australia – and breathed life into one of the UK’s most traditional institutions.

“I think Meghan’s arrival in the Royal Family has given the family another 100 years. She has suddenly made them so relevant and so exciting,” Nick Bullen, an award-winning producer behind numerous royal documentaries, tells Yahoo UK’s The Royal Box.

Highlighting the fact that being American, an actress, mixed-race and divorced would have once excluded her from being in the Royal Family, he adds: “She has just blown the doors off it and she’s here in a big way.”

Royal life isn’t all glitz and glamour on tours and Bullen, founder of TrueRoyalty.tv, points out that everyday drudgery of being a royal can be dull.

“The job is out there every day, shaking hands… for people marrying in, that can be a real challenge.”

But could Meghan and Harry be the couple to shake it up?

With forward-thinking campaigns such as the Invictus Games and Heads Together, Bullen thinks the the two of them, alongside William and Kate, could redefine the monarchy.

He adds: “There could be a soft revolution of what happens within the Firm.”
