Kensington Palace has confirmed that Meghan Markle‘s father, Thomas Markle, will not be attending the royal wedding.

In Meghan’s first statement via the palace, she put a stop to the rumours of whether or not her 73-year-old father would walk her down the aisle on Saturday.

“I have always cared for my father and hope he can be given the space he needs to focus on his health,” her statement read.

“I would like to thank everyone who has offered generous messages of support. Please know how much Harry and I are looking forward to sharing this special day with you.”

Thomas Markle allegedly staged paparazzi photos of himself in the run-up to the ceremony being held at Windsor Castle on Saturday. A day later, American celebrity website TMZ reported that he had pulled out of the wedding because of the embarrassment caused by the images.

The website claimed Meghan’s father had suffered a heart attack and undergoing heart surgery on Wednesday as a result.

Kensington Palace appeared to confirm the news on Monday night, and released the following statement:

“This is a deeply personal moment for Ms. Markle in the days before her wedding. She and Prince Harry ask again for understanding and respect to be extended to Mr. Markle in this difficult situation.”

But the palace haven’t actually said that Thomas isn’t attending the celebrations until today.

Thomas Markle and Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland were due to meet the royal in-laws before the ceremony at Windsor Castle.

It’s not yet known who will walk Meghan Markle down the aisle in her father’s absence, but speculation has it that her father-in-law to be Prince Charles could take on the task.

Others have suggested Meghan’s mother Doria may walk her daughter down the aisle, while others have suggest Meghan may walk herself.
