Meghan Markle Responded to Claims That She Never Helped Her Father Financially

In the latest legal documents submitted in the privacy case between Meghan Markle and Associated Newspapers, the duchess is directly addressing her father Thomas Markle's claim that she never aided him financially, despite him paying for her college.

Setting the record straight, Meghan refuted his accusation, revealing that she made "voluntary contributions" to her dad when she began making money from acting in 2014. The payments stopped, however, after Meghan married Prince Harry in 2018, and their father-daughter relationship began to break down.

In the court docs obtained by The Mirror, Meghan also revealed that Thomas didn't solely pay for her education at Northwestern University. Instead, she claims her mother, Doria Ragland, contributed to the cost of tuition, and that she also received a grant and had a part-time job.

"In any event, it is admitted and has never been denied that the Claimant’s father supported her throughout her childhood and as a young adult," the legal filing reads. "Mr Markle did not pay for all of the Claimant’s college tuition. The Claimant’s mother also contributed towards her university costs. In addition, the Claimant received scholarships for academic achievement, which reduced the payable tuition fees."

The document continued, "The Claimant also undertook a work-study program whereby income she made from working on campus after class was applied directly to supplement and lower her tuition costs, thus personally contributing to her tuition as well." After landing her role on Suits, Meghan began making contributions to her father's income, which were "not toward loan payments but purely to give her father personal financial support."

The current lawsuit stems from a private letter Meghan wrote to her father that The Daily Mail allegedly published without her permission. She has accused the publication of "harassing, humiliating, manipulating, and exploiting" Thomas, and if she wins the case, Meghan revealed that she will donate any damages to anti-bullying charities.
