Meghan Markle Says She Gave Up Her "Entire Life" for the Royal Family

From Town & Country

When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their plans to step away from their senior positions and chart a new path forward within the royal family earlier this year, it was deemed an unprecedented move by the press. Now, the first excerpt from Finding Freedom, a forthcoming biography of the Sussexes by reporters Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, offers insight into the royals' shocking decision.

While the Duke and Duchess "were not interviewed and did not contribute to" the book, per a spokesperson, the biography promises "unique access" and a brief statement from the publisher notes that it was "written with the participation of those closest to the couple."

With that in mind, perhaps the most notable quote from the piece, which ran in the Times this weekend, is one from Meghan herself. Per Scobie and Durand, when the Duchess reflected on her transition out of her life as a working royal, she told a friend: “I gave up my entire life for this family. I was willing to do whatever it takes. But here we are. It’s very sad.”

The excerpt also explores the accusations that Meghan was completely behind the Sussexes' choice to step away from the institution of the monarchy.

“The courtiers blame Meghan, and some family do,” said a source in the piece. But Scobie and Durand make it clear that Harry was onboard with the decision.

"While the British media often blamed royal wives, in Harry’s case, he was very much on board with distancing himself from the public eye. It’s why he gravitated toward the military, had always avoided the pomp as much as he could, and didn’t give his child a title. He long craved a life away from the prying eyes of the media," reads the selection from Finding Freedom.

"Meghan simply emboldened him to make the change. She supported him no matter what. 'Fundamentally, Harry wanted out,' a source close to the couple said. 'Deep down, he was always struggling within that world. She’s opened the door for him on that.'"
