Meghan Markle’s Second Aide Is Leaving, But It's Not as Dramatic as It Sounds

From ELLE

Amidst tabloid reports that Meghan Markle is a "demanding" boss, the Duchess of Sussex is losing a second aide, Samantha Cohen. The Sunday Timesreports that Cohen "intends" to leave next spring after Meghan has her baby. But the departure is far less dramatic-and far less damning of Meghan as a manager-than it seems: Cohen had joined the team in a temporary position and never planned to stay there permanently. The Sunday Times reports that Cohen took over Prince Harry's private secretary Edward Lane Fox's job after he left. She has worked for the royal family for 17 years, the outlet detailed, and was one of the Queen’s most trusted aides.

Cohen was persuaded to join Harry and Meghan's team after she resigned from Buckingham Palace last year after the Queen’s private secretary Christopher Geidt was ousted from his role. Cohen was "fiercely loyal" to him, The Sunday Times reported, but agreed to join Team Sussex while Meghan was adjusting.

While Cohen was only in the job temporarily, she was well-liked, and Meghan had been "keen" to keep her in the position permanently. But Cohen is ready to move on.

“Sam will be a huge loss,” a source with ties to Meghan told the outlet. The source then suggested Meghan may need a less traditional hire for the role as she carves out her place in the royal family. “Going forward, Meghan might need someone cut from a slightly different cloth to traditional courtiers, who is not a career civil servant or royal insider," the source said. "Meghan needs someone with reserves of energy and patience to help her define her future role."
