Guess I need to invest in a few, too.
This past weekend was the first time in a while that the weather actually felt bearable. I was able to get dressed without having to think about the effects the humidity — and thus, my impending sweat outbreaks — would have on my outfit. I could wear exactly what I wanted (ahem, a long-sleeve crop top and a twill midi skirt!) without any worries. And, with the NYC temperatures consistently in the comfortable 60s now, I feel like the (outfit) world is my oyster again. The next piece I’m going to wear? A shirt dress inspired by none other than Meghan Markle, who clearly has a thing for the elevated staple.
If you have been lacking outfit inspiration, Markle’s Invictus Games looks are here to rescue you and bring you out of said slump. While there are plenty of things to take away from her ensembles, like the power of quiet luxury or the ethereal way to wear the sheer trend, I can’t help but notice that she played favorites with the timeless dress that is the, well, shirt dress. And with a quick look back at some of her past sartorial moments, you’ll see that the style has been a pinnacle of many of her outings.
This time around, Markle wore a two-tone, chambray button-down shirt dress with a full skirt, long sleeves, and contrasting white buttons. She rolled up the sleeves for a casual touch, puffed up the collar the slightest bit, and tied the waist belt into a relaxed bow, which also gave the skirt an even more billowy look. She rounded out the look with black leather pumps and a relaxed ponytail that offered a refined, elegant look. Well done, Markle!

Unlike some other dresses, a shirt dress can look both dressy and casual, depending on how you wear it, of course. It’s like a chameleon that can change into anything you want it to be, which makes it such a desirable closet essential; it’s no wonder Markle is regularly seen in it. What’s more is that it’s also an incredibly seasonless piece that can be worn year after year throughout every season — simply layer it up as the temperatures drop.
Shirt dresses come in a range of styles, but the DNA is all the same: it’ll always have that inherently sleek button-down shirt aspect to it, with the silhouettes varying. Markle’s, for example, has an A-line cut that’s fun and flirty, but you’ll also find ultra-short shirt dresses that lean sexier or a more streamlined pick that’s perfect for office days or dinner dates.
All that to say, a shirt dress will have you covered — literally — any day of the week, regardless of the occasion. All you have to think about is which shoes (sneakers or heels?) you’ll wear to match — it’s as simple as that. Shop some of the best shirt dresses that you’ll wear again and again, below.
