Melania Trump wears glamorous $2,790 tuxedo cape to welcome Macrons stateside

Melania Trump seems to be taking a cue from her predecessor when it comes to sartorial diplomacy.

On Monday, to host French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte, for the first state visit of her husband’s presidency, Melania chose to wear a tuxedo cape over a little black dress from Givenchy.

The sleeveless topper with shiny lapels, which retails for $2,790, was most likely selected because of its connection to the Macrons’ country. The label was founded in 1952 by Hubert de Givenchy, who passed away last month at 91. According to the New York Times, “Givenchy was emblematic of a generation of gentlemanly designers who established their couture houses in postwar Paris, nurturing personal relationships with customers and creating entire collections with specific women in mind.”

The first lady was worn the label before. In her first post-inauguration outing for a trip down to Florida, Melania wore a similar cape style, available for $2,095, in a bright red with matching flats from Christian Louboutin.

As for Brigitte, she also opted for a French label wearing a pale yellow coat with black buttons and a ribbon tie around the waist from Louis Vuitton. The 64-year-old former teacher is rarely seen in clothing from any other company, frequently calling on the brand’s head designer Nicolas Ghesquière for custom creations.

After the Macrons’ arrival stateside, they planted a tree at the White House before boarding a helicopter and heading off to Mount Vernon where the couples had a private dinner. On Tuesday night, the Trumps will hold their first official state dinner. Melania has been very involved in the planning of the event, with her communications director Stephanie Grisham telling CNN, “She has been very focused on the experience of the guests and wants to ensure they are able to truly enjoy and remember the occasion. Mrs. Trump selected every item and every detail for the dinner, from the entrée to the chair cushions.”
