Melania Trump Will No Longer Wear Fur (Maybe Thanks to Pamela Anderson)

Melania Trump owns a closet full of fur clothing, but she’s made a new style decision — and former Baywatch star Pamela Anderson may have something to do with it.

“She does not wear fur,” Melania’s spokesperson Stephanie Grisham wrote in an email to CNN on Wednesday. Coincidentally or not, the Baywatch actress tweeted a photo of a note from the first lady, thanking her for an eco-faux fur from Only Me, on the same day.

“Dear Pamela,” the handwritten letter on White House stationery read. “I very much appreciate your sending the beautiful [faux fur]. I am grateful for your support and encouraging words; they mean a great deal. Together, we can empower more women to stand up for their beliefs.”

Anderson captioned the tweet, “Dear Melania, Thank you for your sweet note. It is heartwarming to see you manage your position with such beauty and grace.”

According to CNN, after Trump wore a powder blue Ralph Lauren suit on Inauguration Day in January (the designer banned fur from his collections in 2006), Anderson, who works with the group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), mailed the FLOTUS a faux lamb fur coat with a vegan belt. Anderson reportedly included a letter with the gift that said, “I am so happy that you chose not to wear fur! As first lady, you will help set style trends, and by remaining compassionate with your choices, you will warm the hearts of many.”

Trump’s decision is surprising given her documented affinity for fur. In 2011, she attended the Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony in New York City’s Rockefeller Center wearing a black fur coat. That same year, she wore a black coat to the Comedy Central Roast of Donald Trump. And in 2007, Melania wore a black fur-lined coat with matching fur hat during New York Fashion Week.

PETA Senior Vice President Dan Mathews sent the following statement to Yahoo Style, which read, “Melania first attended a PETA fashion show years ago that featured one of her favorite designers, Marc Bouwer, a longtime PETA supporter who uses no fur, leather or exotic skins in his collections. More recently, Pamela Anderson sent elegant Melania a stylish faux fur, as well as a video showing how animals are cruelly killed in the wild and on fur farms, so it’s no surprise that she is now fur-free, following in the footsteps of so many fashion icons and First Ladies.”

Yahoo Style could not reach Anderson for comment, however the actress has been a longtime animal activist. She’s an honorary director of PETA, having appeared in various advertisements and campaigns for the organization, and has received awards for her activism.
