The most memorable moments from the Golden Globes

The 2019 Golden Globes show was filled with wonderful moments. The night featured many performers entertaining, but the continued push for gender and race equality was the thing most widely celebrated.

Sandra Oh, the first Asian host of the event, also made history in becoming the first woman of Asian descent to win multiple Golden Globes.

If Beale Street Could Talk star Regina King drew praise for her acceptance speech in the category of best supporting actress in any motion picture. “In the next two years everything that I produce … is 50 percent women,” King said. She then challenged everyone, regardless of industry, to follow suit.

The show provided lots of laughs too, as when Christian Bale, who played former Vice President Dick Cheney in Vice, accepted the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy. “Thank you to Satan for giving me inspiration on how to play this role,” Bale joked.

Jeff Bridges, an ardent environmentalist, connected with everyone when receiving the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award. And this year was the first for the Carol Burnett Award, a lifetime achievement honor for television’s greatest contributors — like Burnett.

Finally, Glenn Close won Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture — Drama for The Wife. And she won over the room when she called for women everywhere to stand up. “We have to find personal fulfillment,” Close said. “We have to follow our dreams. And we have to say ‘I have to do that, and I should be allowed to do that.’”

The 2019 Golden Globes aired Sunday at 8 p.m. on NBC.
