Restrictions have been eased or lifted and wedding season is nigh! But there’s no need to freak out about what to wear, guys.
In this episode of In The Know’s The Guide, Jovel Roystan discusses how men can be the freshest guest at any wedding — no matter what the dress code is.
“I love a ceremony when I can come, dressed up looking really nice but also feel like myself, feel relaxed and let my personality shine,” Roystan said.
Men’s Black Tie Wedding Style
“If you’re going to a black-tie wedding you’ll be wearing a tuxedo with a bow tie,” Roystan explained. “If you’re going to a formal wedding it’s a little bit less dressy but still you want to be wearing one of your finest suits with a traditional tie.”
While it can be a bit stuffy, Roystan says you can still have fun. Ditch the uncomfortable shirt and tie and try a cozy turtle neck instead.
“Think about colors too,” he said. “Let’s think about what you might see on the Oscars red carpet. You might see a gold tuxedo jacket, white tuxedo jacket, navy, even burgundy.”
Men’s Semi-Formal and Casual Wedding Style
At a semi-formal wedding, you can lose the tuxedo and stick with a casual suit.
“I love darker earth tones because they’re vibrant. They really stand out but they’re not too distracting,” Roystan suggested.
Some of his picks were a hunter green Ralph Lauren jacket or a burnt orange suit from Express.
“If I were going to a spring or summer wedding, something outdoors, I might go for some pastels,” he said. “I love these tones because they’re lighter. They’re muted variations, so it’s like a smokey salmon not a bright pink.”
While Roystan personally isn’t a fan of printed suits he does recommend the classics, like stripes or plaid. You can also choose a shirt with a subtle microprint, like polka dots, argyle or floral.
Men’s Wedding Footwear
Instead of loafers, brogues or derbies, try something bolder like a Chelsea boot.
“I think they look awesome, they’re one of my favorite shoes to wear. They look really nice with a suit,” he remarked.
For his final look, Roystan chose a steel Express suit with an Express white shirt with a red floral print underneath. He wore a pair of tan Saint Laurent suede boots for the look and a simple white pocket square.
