Marian was born and raised in Chicago, where she brought up Michelle and Craig. When Michelle's husband, former President Barack Obama, was elected, Marian moved to the White House in 2008 to help care for her grandchildren, Malia and Sasha. Needless to say, Marian has plenty of great advice on raising strong, smart kids as does Craig, who has four children of his own.

The episode "Family Ties: On Raising Kids with Craig & Marian Robinson," which premieres September 16 on Spotify, covers all facets of parenting, from bringing infants home from the hospital to sending them off to college. But perhaps the most poignant moment takes place when the family discusses the perils of raising Black children. During the chat, Craig turned the conversation toward the recent Black Lives Matter protests, expressing how inspired he is to watch young people from diverse backgrounds take to the streets since the death of George Floyd at the hands of the police.

"This young group, they're so energized, from a movement standpoint," Craig said.

Marian chimed in, "Every Black person knows a Black person who's been put in jail because they were standing on the wrong corner at the wrong time of night. And they end up in jail. But when you say that to people, they sort of look at you like, oh, [it] couldn't be that bad."

"Right, because it would never happen to them," Michelle said.

Later on, Michelle added, "The fact that there are people out there that treat us less than, when we're working so hard to be better than, that's where the pain comes from. That's what these young people are so angry about," Michelle explained. "Because they're doing everything right, everything they are told, and it doesn't matter ..."
