The speculation. The guesses. The insider tip-offs. All were wrong, wrong, and wrong again. What did Michelle Obama wear to the inauguration ball this year? A custom-made red velvet and chiffon halter style gown by her go-to designer Jason Wu.

You may recall she wore Wu for 2009′s inauguration, but back then she was the new politico wife on the block and the floaty white gown was a welcome-to-society piece designed to make her look like North America’s newly-crowned princess. But, if four years ago the Obamas happily played the role of Camelot 2.0, this year they made a loud and clear statement that they were a modern power couple. Michelle’s gown was decidedly bolder (it doesn’t get more in your face than crimson) to match her new sassier hairstyle. Sticking to the old adage, “accentuate the positive” her halter dress showcased her trademark toned arms, cinched at the waist, and floated over the hips. We’re guessing underneath there were red kitten heels–Mrs. O loves her sensible pumps–but the brand we do know: Jimmy Choo. And her jewellery consisted of silver bracelets including two from L.A.-based designer, Kimberly McDonald.

Earlier in the day, the Obama clan arrived for the ceremonial swearing-in swathed in various shades of the same hue: purple, the colour of royalty. Michelle’s Thom Browne coat was accentuated with a jewelled belt, aubergine leather gloves, and black knee-high boots. The look was the epitome of chic: classic with an edge; a woman in control; a woman letting the world know she is #winning. It’s a look not only appropriate for a First Lady, but for the many women around the world–corporate types, working mothers, 20-something’s chasing their careers–who admire and draw inspiration from the FLOTUS. And so begins another four years of Obama mania, and (thank goodness) a steady stream of  style moments from Michelle. Four more years to anticipate, dissect and emulate once again. *This story has been updated since first publication.
