Mindy Kaling Responded After a Commenter Said Her Kids Have "Very Caucasian Names"

Her son and daughter have very special middle names.

Vogue India cover star Mindy Kaling revealed her kids' middle names on Instagram after a commenter noted that they have "very Caucasian names." Kaling revealed the cover on her feed and many commenters noted how beautiful the photo was (she had given birth to her son just six weeks before the shoot). Kaling's two children are named Katherine and Spencer. Kaling's actual name is Vera Mindy Chokalingam.

"Not my business but do your children have Indian middle names? You are proud of your culture and I was wondering why the kids have very Caucasian names," a commenter wrote on Kaling's post.

"They do! Swati and Avu!," Kaling responded.

"I was so excited to be asked to be the cover of @vogueindia's December issue but seriously nervous because I would have to shoot it six weeks after giving birth to my son Spencer," Kaling captioned the photo. "I was not feeling body confident, and even considered saying no."

Entertainment Tonight notes that both of those names have a special meaning to Kaling. Swati is Kaling's late mother's name and Avu is her father's name, making for two very sweet homages.

"I’m thrilled I have these photos as a memento of this very specific time in my life," she added. "'Post partum pandemic fabulous' is what I like to call it."

In the story, Kaling spoke about how she always wanted to be a mother and how she can trace that desire to her relationship with her late mother.

"The best relationship I had in my life was the one with my mom," she told Vogue India. "It was so pure and so fun and uncomplicated, and I hope that I can have that with my son or daughter — if I'm lucky, with at least one of my kids — when they get older."
