The Toronto Blue Jays lost 4-0 to the New York Yankees in the second game of their weekend series on Saturday, and did so largely without manager Charlie Montoyo.
Montoyo was punted from the game in the fourth inning, earning him his fourth ejection of the season. With it, he now leads all MLB managers in that category.

Prior to this year, Montoyo had only been ejected four times over three seasons since being named Toronto’s manager in 2019. He’s now reached that mark in less than three months in 2022 and there are still 97 contests left to play.
That doesn’t matter to Montoyo, though. His main concern was making sure his pitcher, Alek Manoah, remained in the game during a controversial play.
After the Yankees had already taken a 3-0 lead, thanks to a three-run double from outfielder Aaron Hicks, Manoah went on to hit the next batter, catcher Jose Trevino. Or at least, that’s how the umpires ruled it.
Trevino was struck by a 91.8 MPH two-seamer from Manoah, however, the Yankees backstop appeared to swing as the pitch hit him. In the end, though, home plate umpire Ryan Additon ruled that Trevino held up. That’s when Manoah began to argue his case.
But before he had the chance, Montoyo raced out of the dugout and directed Additon’s attention away from Manoah. As a manager is supposed to do.
The Florida, Puerto Rico native stands up for his players. That’s been evident ever since he arrived on the job and it’s what led to his latest ejection.
Charlie Montoyo says he left the dugout to protect his pitcher, who he didn’t want to get ejected.

Following Saturday’s defeat, Montoyo’s club has now lost three straight, dropping them to a 37-28 record. They’ve also either tied or lost their last two series.
Still, the Blue Jays currently control the first wild-card seed in the American League, as they sit one game up on the second-place Tampa Bay Rays as of this writing.
