Mom Hilariously Mocks Celebrities and Their Glamorous, Ridiculous Lives

Everyone has something to say about how celebrities and magazines depict a ridiculously unrealistic way of living, but no one has a more hilarious than Kate Casey, author, comedian, fashion critic and podcast host.

On Instagram, the mother can often be seen mimicking celebrities and magazine spreads in way more realistic settings, like a side-by-side of Kim Kardashian getting her hair and makeup done by her glam squad and Casey getting her hair brushed by her toddler daughter. She frequently captions the images with a witty description and, “same, right?” It’s pretty hard not throw Casey a like with her take on the way celebrities “live,” if you can even call it that. Casey would probably agree that it’s more like floating or dreaming.

“My approach is to compare a magazine or celebrity photo to a normal mother,” Casey, who has four children, tells Yahoo Style. Upon seeing a ridiculous image, she begs the question, “how normal is this photo?” But she’s not trying to tear down Hollywood and the glam front it puts up. “I think my posts are a combination of ode and funny criticism. I am also making fun of myself in these pictures. For example, I wish I could wear Kim Kardashian’s plastic boots, but the closest I could come was wrapping my legs with saran wrap.”

I miss Kim.

She’s referring to the clear, plastic thigh-high boots Kardashian wore in New York City this past September, and the side-by-side she created with her legs wrapped up like chicken cutlets.

“I started making the collages for my followers years ago. I just want to make people laugh,” she says. And that she does. Anyone in need of a good chuckle should just look at Casey sitting in a bath in a gold dress beside a bunch of Barbie dolls as she takes on one of Mariah Carey’s infamous hot-tub pics or hanging from monkey bars to recreate Beyonce’s Ivy Park ad.

She was first inspired to compare her life to that of Hollywood’s elite when she saw Kristen Stewart’s 2014 Elle spread. The actress walked the aisles of a grocery store in designer duds, including a pink Chanel suit from the French brand’s Fall 2014 collection. “Who goes to the grocery store in luxury clothes?” Casey recalls of her reaction to the photo. “I strapped my new baby into a Bjorn and dragged my other two kids into the grocery store and had my babysitter take the photo. I have been taking similar photos ever since.”

And while it looks like some of these photos are dumb luck, she plans them out. “I search for photos and in many cases I am sent suggestions. It feels like a team effort at this point. I am often asked who takes the pictures for me and the answer is anyone standing nearby,” Casey, who now has 10.7k followers on Instagram, says.

While she’s not trying to get the attention of the celebrity in the image necessarily, sometimes she does. Like when she completely recreated Gwyneth Paltrow’s supermarket spread for Harper’s Bazaar (clearly, she has a bone to pick with celebrities pretending supermarket aisles are catwalks — who can blame her?).

“The photo editors at Harper’s Bazaar loved my photo parody of Gwyneth Paltrow in the grocery store,” she gushes. “When I saw she commented on the photo, I spit out my drink. It turns out Gwyneth Paltrow has a good sense of humor!” On the side-by-side of both women wearing LBDs in the cereal aisle, Paltrow commented, “This is awesome.” What a good sport.

Having the opportunity to walk a mile (or should we say…aisle?) in a celebrity’s shoes, it begs the question: what is wearing a swimsuit to the grocery store really like? “During the Gwyneth Paltrow photo session a man in the checkout line yelled at me for only wearing a bathing suit and a suit jacket,” Casey recalls. “Later that morning I received a note from the manager of the grocery store letting me know how much the staff enjoyed watching me walk down the cereal aisle. I apologized to the other customers, but for the most part they would laugh and then continue shopping for ingredients for dinner that night.”

As Casey would say, same, right?
