"I had no idea where this condom came from," the mom explains in her now-viral TikTok
Crystal Starnes was surprised to get a text from her son's kindergarten teacher sharing that the little boy had found a condom in his pocket
Starnes has one idea of how it might have ended up there but knows it didn't come from her home
The mom shared the whole story on TikTok, where it instantly went viral — and received some funny comments from other parents and teachers
Every day of parenting is an adventure.
Crystal Starnes, on TikTok @mrs.starnes22, was shocked when she got a text from her 5-year-old son Hudson's teacher about an unusual discovery in the little boy's pocket.
Sharing the texts in a TikTok, Starnes shows the teacher wrote, "Good morning! Let me first say Hudson is NOT in trouble over this lol! He came up to me before recess and pulled this out of his pocket asking what this was. I did not tell him what it was, just that I will dispose of it and let you know we discovered this!"
What followed was a picture of a single, non-latex condom that the 5-year-old produced. While most would probably think it's something he found at home, that wasn't the case here, Mom says.
"My husband and I have been together for 7 years. Hudson turns 6 next month and I got my tubes tied when he was a baby, so we've not had any use for condoms in our home. So when his teacher says he found one in his pocket, it was very shocking," she tells PEOPLE.

The mom admits, "I was surprised, and I thought it was hilarious."
Starnes later found out that her son's teacher had asked him questions about where he found it, to which Hudson explained, "I just stuck my hand in my pocket and that's where it was."
As for how it got there, Starnes thought about it and realized, "We just bought those jeans from Walmart about a week ago. I'd taken tags off of them this morning. I guess somebody could have been playing around and pranked somebody by putting one in there. Really, that's all we could think of."
Starnes shared the hilarious story on Facebook, where a friend encouraged her to share it on TikTok because, "This is so viral worthy."
What was also funny for Starnes and her husband was the fact that Hudson didn't even think to bring it up at home that evening. They asked him about it a few days later.
"We were talking and he was standing in our bedroom and put his hands in his pockets. He goes, 'I just stuck my hand in my pocket and felt something in there. I pulled it out and that's what it was.' "
(Hudson tells PEOPLE, "I think it was a glow stick," referring to the extra glowsticks his parents bring home for their kids sometimes from the nightclub they manage.)
Starnes knew it was a funny mix-up, but didn't expect such a strong reaction to it online. "I logged in an hour after I posted it and it already had 50,000 likes. It was insane," she says.
Starnes did note some snarky commenters who suggested her son had just outed some infidelity in her marriage. "I'm not worried about it, but one person kept commenting about it, so I made her her own video explaining what happened once again."
"Most of the responses were other parents or other teachers telling stories about what other kids have done, so that was fun to read about their different experiences," she continues. "It lets me know that I'm not the only one that has some feral kids sometimes."
The mom says it's just another day in the life while parenting. "Kids are wild. You never know what to expect, especially with little boys," she laughs. "They are a different kind."
