Proving yet again that there's really no such thing as bad publicity, the mom who faced Internet backlash for creating a GoFundMe to raise money to take her daughters to Disney World seems to have successfully achieved her goal.
Nikki Smith, a 33-year-old mother of two girls, first made headlines back in March when her crowdfunding campaign went viral. Much like when a guy tried to crowdfund a $15,000 engagement ring for his unsuspecting fianceé, people attacked Smith over what they felt was an inappropriate use of GoFundMe, a social fundraising platform more popularly used for charitable causes. Because while Disney is awesome and all, it's not exactly a necessary expense.
Of course, there's nothing technically against the rules in using GoFundMe for personal gain and raising money for luxuries. And unlike engagement ring dude, Smith somehow managed to overcome the initial outcry over her decision to tap into the Internet's collective wallet to fund her daughters' "dream vacation." Her original fundraising goal was $6,000, but the page was shut down soon after she posted a link to it on her Facebook page, which led to her GoFundMe page going viral. At the time, Smith had only raised $12. She soon bounced back and launched a new GoFundMe for the trip. She's resilient, I'll give her that.
Surprisingly, in the less-than-a-month since all that drama, she's raised a whopping £6,692 (over $8,500) - which ismore than enough to take a family of three to Disney. Hell, they could even splurge on a dining plan and one of the deluxe resorts at this point.
In an update to the new GoFundMe page, which has been shared 21,000 times on Facebook, Smith (who said she was "traumatized" by the Internet's reaction) thanked her supporters for their 128 individual donations. "Thankyou!!! Thankyou !!! Thankyou !!! You have no idea what this means to me, all of the negative, abusive comments I've received are starting to feel like it's worth it for my girls," Smith wrote. She accompanied her update with a photo of Tinkerbell and the Field of Dreams quote "If you believe the impossible, the incredible can come true."
I guess here's hoping Smith puts the money to good use and her kids enjoy the heck out of that Disney trip.
