More than just a hot dog: DogHaus Biergarten offers food that looks as good as it tastes

Dog Haus Biergarten, the California-based restaurant chain that aims to lift up the humble hot dog and sausage, has opened its first location in the Tri-Cities near Road 68 in Pasco.

The Pasco restaurant is led by owner Mike Kohloff, who created Dog Haus as the brick-and-mortar base for it and for additional “virtual” brands it will provide beginning in about six weeks.

All seven brands will use the single kitchen. Customers who visit in person will only see the ambitious, and Instagram worthy offerings of Dog Haus Biergarten.

The restaurant at 7425 Sandifur Parkway opened March 16 with an extensive menu of hot dogs and sausages, hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, sliders and a rotating selection of local craft beers, a full bar and a selection of daily happy hour specials.

It offers 10% discounts veterans, first responders, teachers and nurses with ID or uniform.

In honor of the opening, Dog Haus signed on as a sponsor of the Tri-City Dust Devils.

Kohloff said he was thrilled Dog Haus rang up nearly 250 tickets on his first day. He is giving kitchen staff time to acclimate to the job before launching the virtual menu offered under the Absolute brand: Jailbird Wings, Bad Ass Breakfast Burritos, Plant B, Big Belly Burger and more.

He said the concept is like “ghost kitchens,” with a twist: Doug Haus only cooks for the brands it owns.

Dog Haus, motto “The Absolute Wurst,” launched in Pasadena, Calif., in 2010 and emphasizes building memorable meals using high quality ingredients. Kohloff is an Army veteran who came to the Tri-Cities for an IT post and set out fulfilling his dream of opening a restaurant.

The menu includes a California-themed dog topped with arugula, avocado, tomato, crispy onions and basil aoli. Its corn dog is made with root beer batter.

In addition to a truly massive food menu, DogHaus also has a full bar and plenty of beer on tap. They’re now open at 7425 Sandifur Parkway, near Road 68 in Pasco.

The sausage lineup includes “The Fonz,” a spicy Italian pastrami and mozzarella dish; the “Reservoir Hog,” which is Polish kielbasa with chili, slaw and yellow mustard; and the “T-Mex,” featuring a beef chorizo and pepper jack sausage, avocado, chipotle aoli, slaw, jalapenos and pickled peppers.

Kohloff’s personal favorite is the “Hangover Burger,” with chili, cheese, bacon and an over-easy egg on top.

Happy hour specials offer $2 off draft beer and wine as well as cocktails, and $2.99 sliced sausage, $1.49 tots or fries, and $3 PBR 16-ounce cans.

Business hours are 8 a.m.-10 p.m., Sunday to Thursday, and 8 a.m.-midnight, Friday and Saturday.
