Fitness blogger Morgan Mikenas pays special attention to her lifestyle choices. As a body builder, she regularly shares fitness regimes and body transformation photos on Instagram.
Now Mikenas is embracing a new sort of change. In a bid to become “more comfortable in herself,” she’s decided to stop shaving her body hair — and is encouraging other women to do the same.
Body hair removal dates back to ancient Egypt and Greece, but took off in the 20th century when Gillette sold the first razor for women in 1915, declaring body hair both unhygienic and unfashionable.
The 1960s saw the return of female fuzz, but the porn industry boom in the 1980s stigmatized the way we view pubic hair once more.
Last month, a year after ditching the razor, Mickenas shared on her personal decision to stop shaving. “I like being my most natural, human self,” she said in a recent YouTube video. “I don’t think anyone should be ashamed of themselves in any way … when you have nothing to hide and you can freely be yourself.”
Mickenas also reveals she had been bullied for her hairy legs in school, when she was 11 or 12, and ran home crying to ask her mom if she could learn how to shave.
Now a tool of empowerment, Mickenas swears she’ll never pick up a razor again.
“It’s led me on a path of self-love and has changed my life.”
