How much should a babysitter really cost? That depends where you live.

In their 2017 childcare survey, UrbanSitter asked more than 20,000 families about the going rate for babysitters in their area and how much they spend on childcare each year. Unsurprisingly, certain cities were costlier - for example, babysitters in San Francisco charged the highest average rate, around $17.34 an hour.

The survey - which looks at parents' hiring practices, date night habits and childcare priorities - covers plenty of ground, but one nugget that sticks out? That nearly half of the parents surveyed (48 percent) spend at least $1,000 a year on childcare.
