Nancy Pelosi's reactions to Trump stole the State of the Union spotlight

The California congresswoman — who also wore white for the occasion — joined Vice President Mike Pence in sitting behind President Trump during Tuesday’s State of the Union. While Pence gamely applauded during key moments of Trump’s speech, Pelosi was seen reading her notes and pointedly clapping at POTUS, prompting him to flash a series of tight grins.

Her literal clapback has now achieved meme status.

Other Pelosi reactions also garnered attention, from her unimpressed-seeming body language to her look of annoyance when Trump referenced “ridiculous partisan investigations.”

Pelosi later took to Twitter to slam the “misrepresentations” she objected to in the speech.

Pelosi’s actions were criticized by some viewers, however.

Trump may have worked in his own insult. CBS News reports that the president broke tradition by not waiting for Pelosi, in her role as Speaker of the House, to introduce him before he began his address.

The political leaders have famously clashed over Trump’s demand for funding for a proposed border wall, which resulted in one government shutdown, with the threat of another one looming.
