Report: Raptors add 5-time NBL champion Trevor Gleeson to coaching staff

The Toronto Raptors are expected to add five-time NBL championship coach Trevor Gleeson as an assistant coach, according to Marc Stein of the New York Times.

The 53-year-old Australian is well-travelled as a coach — much like head coach Nick Nurse — having coached in the D-League and South Korea before establishing himself as an icon in the Australian game. Gleeson is a two-time NBL coach of the year and his Perth Wildcats never missed the playoffs in his nine seasons with the club.

Nurse will need to make several hires with his staff following a season of change. Lead assistant Chris Finch left the Raptors midseason to coach the Minnesota Timberwolves, while another lead assistant Sergio Scariolo returned overseas this summer.

Nurse will presumably assign Gleeson as one of the replacements, and there is a good chance that deposed Indiana Pacers coach Nate Bjorkgren will also return to his former position. Nurse values head coaching experience among his assistants, and he is also an admirer of the international game.
