You need to see these over-the-top homecoming mums

There’s no place that does homecoming quite like the South, and there’s no place that does it quite like Texas. Homecoming (also known as hoco) is a pretty big deal in the southern state, where celebrations take place to commemorate back-to-school and the beginning of football season.

With traditions like pep rallies, dances and spirit weeks, hoco can be a pretty crazy time. But for students in Texas, it gets even crazier when it comes to homecoming mums.

The decorated chrysanthemums exchanged between homecoming dates are more widely recognized as a type of corsage. But through the years, mums have evolved — and grown — so they’re no longer that similar to the classic small bouquet of flowers you’d wear on your wrist or pin to your dress.

This year’s crazy creations have flooded the Twitter feeds of students participating in Texas homecoming, as they pour their excitement, creativity, and money into these larger than life creations. Some schools that take part in the tradition offer more modest mums for purchase, but from the looks of the photos shared, it seems that the ones provided just don’t cut it.

The traditional exchange of mums takes place between homecoming dates, where the female receives a mum and the male receives a garter. But the tradition of mums has developed into one that calls for “mum parties,” where they’re decorated with friends or school sports teams.

The photos show how mums continue to get bigger and better. So much so that this 5-foot mum cost $600.

Some may claim that this is, in fact, “the mum to end all mums.” However, it might just be more motivation to make other homecoming mums even crazier.
