New York Yankees outfielder Giancarlo Stanton left Tuesday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays in the fourth inning after an awkward slide into third base earlier in the night at Yankee Stadium.

Stanton was thrown out at third base in the first inning after attempting to slide in head first after a groundout by Luke Voit. He was tagged out and reportedly seemed fine after the play, however it appeared as if his left hand was stepped on.

Stanton was pulled from the game just before the fourth inning, and the team later announced that he suffered a right knee contusion. An MRI is scheduled for Tuesday night to determine the severity of the injury, and he will be evaluated again on Wednesday morning.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said after the game they believe the injury occurred when Stanton slid into third, though they weren’t positive, and that the team would see how he felt on Wednesday morning.

Stanton has played in just nine games for the Yankees this season after dealing with numerous injuries, and only returned off the injured list on June 18. A left bicep strain, shoulder strain and left calf strain have kept the 29-year-old on the bench since April 1. He has recorded eight hits and one home run in that time.

The Yankees beat the Blue Jays 4-3 on Tuesday night, and broke MLB record by homering in 28 straight games thanks to a leadoff home run from second baseman DJ LeMahieu.
