Newly engaged couple rescued from the Colorado mountaintop where the proposal took place
A Texan couple had an unusual engagement celebration, after their mountaintop proposal led to the pair having to be rescued from the Colorado trail where it had all taken place.
Joshua Mason and Katie Davis flew from Denton, Texas, to Denver on Friday, before setting out on a hike the following day. According to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, the couple went from the Fourth of July Trailhead to Jasper Peak on the Continental Divide, where Mason was searching for a scenic spot “away from any other people.” He found that spot where he was able to surprise Davis by popping the question. However, the moment seemed to make them lose track of time, as they got stuck on the trail while it became dark.
The couple started their descent after noon, and Boulder County Sheriff’s Office mountain deputy Dan Walter told Fox 31 why it might have been easy for the couple to lose their way. “As it started getting dark, there’s no trail to see. It’s not clearly marked.”
The couple hadn’t been equipped to be in the cold and didn’t bring enough food or water to last them for the journey, leaving them disoriented and lost. Ultimately, they resorted to screaming in the off chance that somebody would hear them. Luckily, a lone hiker heard their cries for help and brought them back to a campsite where they were given food, water, and shelter in a tent.
According to the sheriff’s report, both Mason and Davis “were showing signs of altitude sickness as well as severe dehydration.” One of the hikers at the campsite hiked down to her car to drive to Nederland, Colo., for cell service to call 911.
The campers were located at Diamond Lake at around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday morning, when paramedics determined that the couple needed to be moved to a lower altitude immediately. Fortunately, their condition had improved significantly, and they were able to walk down the trail with assistance from Rocky Mountain Rescue Group personnel. Nearly two hours later, they arrived at the trailhead, needing no further medical assistance.
“Mason acknowledged that he did not allow enough time to complete the hike before dark, and they did not carry enough water or food,” the report states.
Mason didn’t immediately respond to Yahoo Lifestyle’s request for comment. However, the couple reportedly remain engaged, despite the lack of judgment. If anything, this proposal is sure to be memorable.
