Leafs' Michael Bunting appears to take cross-check to head with no penalty called

On a night where Auston Matthews reached the 50-goal mark for the first time in a win over the Winnipeg Jets, there wasn't a whole lot to complain about for Toronto Maple Leafs fans.

Well, maybe there was just one thing.

Forward Michael Bunting appeared to take a cross-check to the head from Jets defenceman Ville Heinola while crashing the net early in the first period. Bunting remained in the game, while Heinola avoided a penalty on the play.

Here’s the play in question, with the incident occurring directly in front of an official.

On this angle, it looked like a clear hit to the head and you don’t have to look far to get a sense of how Leafs fans felt about it. Bunting is one of the few players on the Maple Leafs that has proven adept at drawing penalty calls this season, during a year in which some of the team’s best players have been unable to earn a friendly whistle, notably Matthews.

Matthews also drew a suspension earlier this season for cross-checking Buffalo Sabres blueliner Rasmus Dahlin during the Heritage Classic. Matthews received a two-game ban despite his relatively clean record with the NHL's Department of Player Safety.

Earlier this week, Maple Leafs fans were irate after Boston Bruins star Taylor Hall avoided supplementary discipline from the league office after throwing an apparent punch at Ilya Lyubushkin. Lyubushkin left the game and did not return, while Justin Holl was also injured during the contest.

Admittedly, this Bunting incident looks a lot less egregious than the Hall-Lyubushkin clash, but we’ll leave it up to you:
