NHL trade roundup: Islanders land Eberle, Schlemko to Habs

The Vegas Golden Knights wasted no time making moves after the trade freeze was lifted Thursday morning.

But they’re not the only team swinging deals.

Here’s a rundown of Thursday’s trade frenzy:

To Islanders: Jordan Eberle
To Oilers: Ryan Strome

The lowdown: The Islanders get a skilled winger with four-straight 20-goal seasons to play alongside John Tavares, while the Oilers get out from under the final two years of Eberle’s $6 million contract. The Oilers need the cap space to sign Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl to extensions, although it’s being reported Kris Russell is first in line for a payday. Ryan Strome, 23, struggled to live up to his promise with the Islanders and will get a fresh start in Edmonton. The Oilers now have three of the top-five picks from the 2011 draft in Strome (No. 5), Adam Larsson (No. 4) and Ryan-Nugent Hopkins (No. 1).

David Schlemko. (Jason Franson/CP)

To Canadiens: David Schlemko
To Golden Knights: 5th-round pick (2019)

The lowdown: Montreal adds some much-needed depth on the left side of its defense after losing Alexei Emelin to Vegas in the expansion draft. Schlemko, 30, will earn $2.1M annually for the next three seasons, giving the Canadiens a better defenseman at half the cost. The Golden Knights selected Schlemko in the expansion draft from the Sharks, where he averaged 16:44 of ice time last season while chipping in two goals and 16 assists in 62 games.

To Hurricanes: Trevor van Riemsdyk, 7th-round pick (2018)
To Golden Knights: 2nd-round pick, via Penguins (2017)

The lowdown: The Hurricanes add another prime-aged defenseman to play the right side on their bottom pair. The 25-year-old, who was taken from Chicago in the expansion draft, played 18:24 for the Blackhawks last season with five goals and 16 points in 58 games. Vegas gets yet another pick, bringing their total to 13, including six in the first three rounds, for this weekend’s draft.
