Nicole Richie‘s personal style is far from a minimalist — and it suits her fashion-forward, bohemian style in which accessories and jewelry are key to making or breaking a look. “If someone says before you leave the house take one thing off, I’m more of the belief that you add one more thing, that you put one more thing on,” Richie tells Yahoo Lifestyle.

Accessories “can completely change an outfit.” This can range from items like a silky scarf, velvet headband or bold jewelry. “I’ve been wearing costume jewelry for as long as I can remember,” says Richie, adding, “The reason why I love it is it just adds — especially if you’re somebody who layers like me — another layer to whatever jewelry story you already have.”

Using Richie’s style rule, you can easily take a casual T-shirt to the next level or add flair to a NYE look. Either way, “it always just adds a nice extra layer to a look,” she says.

You can wrap it around your hair if your hair is messy. It’s just like a nice little tie-in. You can put it on with jeans and a T-shirt, and it just automatically gives your outfit a complete, full and very cool look.”
