This nurse’s flu rant is going viral — and for good reason.

Katherine Lockler is a nurse in Penascola, Fla., who is concerned about the public’s lack of caution when it comes to this year’s particularly nasty flu.

This concern is what inspired her to film a six minute video after a 12-hour work shift. Lockler begins the video by detailing the ways you can contract influenza.

“If you’re not aware of how the flu is spread — the only way you can get it is through your eyes, nose or your mouth. That means if you touch something and you rub your eye, you could get the flu,” she explains.

She discusses how this year’s influenza has been the worst in recent years with almost 40 deaths this season already. The video quickly takes a turn with Lockler sharing a magic trick meant to deter the spread of influenza. This “trick” is simply sneezing into your arm. She repeats the motion a second time in slow motion.

To further her point about the best ways to avoid catching the flu, Lockler shares the story of a softball coach who brought his whole team in to visit one player at the hospital.

“You just got maybe 15 new vectors, or carriers of the flu, by them just walking in,” she explains.

She sarcastically explains the realities of “the cesspool of funky flu” taking over emergency rooms across North America. The video has received more than 5.1 million views, 98,000 shares and 25,000 reactions.

Viewers were quick to support the nurse, praising her for her brutal honesty and thanking her for the “often thankless” work she does.

“She is saying what is common sense to the average person and instructional to others. Awesome! Wise words! Thank you! Congratulations on being brave and honest!” commented one viewer.

“Amen, sister! God bless you for trying to share some good ol’ common sense to educate folks! I, for one, am certainly thankful and respect what you all do,” added another.

Other healthcare workers were also quick to show their support.

“Your friendly, ER and hospital wide respiratory therapists approve this message, too!” commented one follower.

Included in Lockler’s quirky narrative is a simple message that is very effective in deterring the spread or contraction of the flu.

“Just wash your stinking hands!”
