Whether you pair it with fruit, pancakes, cookies or just by the spoonful, Nutella is one of the world's favorite products. The decadent and creamy chocolate hazelnut spread is beloved by so many that it has quite the cult following.
So when the company behind the sweet, Ferrero, decided to change up their cherished recipe, the Internet (understandably) went nuts.
The change was announced on the Facebook page for Hamburg Consumer Protection Center, which reported an increase in skimmed milk powder and sugar (which already amounts for half of the entire product) but a lower fat content per jar.
A spokesperson for the Center went on record saying: “As the color of the new Nutella is lighter, we are working on the assumption that skimmed milk powder was added at the expense of cacao.” Ferrero, along with other companies, aren't required to list the amount of cacao in its products, but it seems cacao has "slipped back" on the list of Nutella's ingredients.
Some believe the change will bring a lighter consistency and less chocolatey-taste, but the brand is reassuring consumers that the quality of the product will not change. "The quality ... and all the other characteristics of Nutella remain the same," said Ferrero.
In response to the report, Nutella fans took to Twitter with the hashtag #NutellaGate to express their disappointment in the change.
