What Subway Street Style ACTUALLY Looks Like

On Monday morning, while you were still hitting snooze on your alarm clock, some very fashionable A-list actresses were already riding the subway. Except, not really.

Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow have released the first official photo from Ocean’s Eight, and one of the film’s most stylish stars, Rihanna, immediately debuted the subway snap on Twitter. In the all-female heist spin-off, a killer crew comprised of Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Sarah Paulson, Rihanna, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, and Awkwafina will undertake a heist at the Met Gala in a filmed fictionalization of the annual event that has already garnered two very glamorous cameos from Kim Kardashian West and Kendall Jenner.

Thus it makes perfect sense that the group would take to the train in a veritable parade of high-fashion street style, sporting an array of designer bags, boots, sunglasses, and so many fabulous coats.

But does their costume-curated aesthetic actually reflect what New York City subway street style actually looks like? Not entirely. While many an urban strap-hanger takes their commuting-style just as seriously as do the well-coifed criminals of Debbie Ocean’s (Bullock) crew, subway street style tends to epitomize the time-honored mix of form and function, mixing of-the-moment trends with classic silhouettes, designer wares with personalized thrift store favorites. Oh, and shoes in which you can actually walk. (That flats are now trendy is only a bonus.)

Case in point? The examples of what subway-bound street style actually looks like.

Step onto any train heading downtown and there will be hundreds of commuters in Stan Smiths. While the Ocean’s 8 crew looks cool, their high heels would be in the bottom of true subway user’s big tote.

While canvas tote bags are the workhorse of subway commuter bags, not a single cast member was carrying one. Instead, the ladies look suspicious carrying big duffels to hide their stolen goods.

As for the hair, blowouts never survive a trip underground. Instead, ponytails and messy buns are the way to go. And then sometimes there are man buns, served with a side of side-eye. (Clearly, the above gentleman did not get the memo: it’s all about the man braid, now.)

Of course, a lot of the fashion references are actually pretty accurate.

Like the woman who color coordinated her coat with her roses. That’s so something Mindy Kaling, as Dr. Lahiri, in real life, or any other character she’s playing, would do.

Or this woman wearing a black and white fur coat that’s so reminiscent of Cate Blanchett‘s jacket.

There’s no telling if this Brooklyn gentleman got the inspiration for his look from Sandra Bullock’s furry white Ocean’s Eight coat, but he’s certainly keeping it subway-chic in Celine.

There are a few tips though that the movie’s stars could take from commuters.

Never neglect your accessories.
