It’s official: Drew Allar is Penn State’s quarterback for the 2023 season
Penn State officially has its starting quarterback for the 2023 season.
Former five-star recruit and last year’s second-string quarterback Drew Allar has won the team’s quarterback competition and will start against West Virginia. Allar was announced as the starter on the video boards in Beaver Stadium just prior to the game.
Allar was widely presumed to be the starter after four-year starter Sean Clifford exhausted his eligibility, but Franklin said there would be a competition for the job during fall camp, just as he said there is at every position. He was competing with redshirt freshman Beau Pribula for the position.
The delay to announce the starter comes despite Allar getting the majority of the reps with the first team during fall camp.
The new starter threw passes in 10 games last year, including when he entered the season opener against Purdue. He threw for 344 yards and four touchdowns on 35-of-60 passing in reps that mostly came in blowouts.
