An old school Charlotte favorite was named best burger in NC by Reader’s Digest
Brooks Sandwich House — a Charlotte favorite for decades — has a new accolade to celebrate. Reader’s Digest has deemed the restaurant as having the best burger in North Carolina.
The national publication said, “Don’t let the name fool you. Brooks’ Sandwich House in Charlotte serves up more than sandwiches, though you will find them on the menu. The cash-only spot has been open since 1973, and it knows how to treat your taste buds, so order as recommended: ‘all the way.’ That means topped with mustard, onions, and a helping of smoky beef chili. But don’t make a weekend trip out of it, as the place is open only Monday through Friday.”
The NoDa fixture celebrated its 50th anniversary on June 24. It was founded by the late Calvin “CT” Brooks Jr. Later on, his twin sons, David and Scott, ran the business together until 2019, when Scott Brooks was killed while opening the cash-only restaurant.
Despite the devastating loss, the family has carried on with Scott’s trademark saying, “Too blessed to be stressed.” A third generation of Brooks family members are now helping David to serve up burgers, hot dogs and its famous chili to hungry customers, although they have considered selling the restaurant’s land in recent months.
