Olivia Rodrigo GUTS Gallery Pop-Up Experience Opens in New York City

Olivia Rodrigo's GUTS is finally here. The singer-songwriter has teamed up with American Express and Spotify to celebrate the release of her sophomore album with a curated pop-up experience in New York City. On September 7 — or as Rodrigo calls it, “GUTS Eve" — super fans made their way to a private opening of the GUTS Gallery, which opens to the public starting September 8. The event offered exclusive merch, GUTS-themed activations and photo opportunities, and a candid interview with Rodrigo herself, moderated by fashion journalist Eva Chen.

The entrance of the gallery looked like a post-party reflection, as if we were transported to the green front lawn of the rager from the “Bad Idea Right?” music video — fans crushed purple plastic cups under their feet and kicked purple and black balloons while making their way to the front door. The rest of the gallery was tucked inside the “house,” taking fans through a GUTS-themed living room, kitchen, and bedroom.

The pop-up will be open from 1 - 6 p.m. on September 8, and 12 - 7 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Amex Card Members and Spotify fans will have exclusive access the first hour of the pop-up each day. There will be exclusive merch options for Amex Card Members and Spotify fans, as well as an exclusive, dedicated checkout line for card holders.

However, GUTS merch at the pop-up will be available to anyone who attends throughout the weekend. The merch list includes t-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, sweatpants, and accessories like spiral notebooks, bumper stickers, dad hats, beanies, tote bags, and more. Did we mention that everyone who stops by the pop-up will receive a complimentary GUTS tote bag? (All the details you'll need to plan your visit can be found on Olivia Rodrigo’s website here.)

Rodrigo made a surprise appearance at the pop-up on Thursday evening, and treated fans to previews of four songs just hours before the album was released in the United States: “All-American B*tch,” “Logical,” “Get Him Back!,” and “Teenage Dream.” Sophomore album scaries are a real thing, especially for 20-year-old Rodrigo who has spoken at length about feeling pressure to recreate the electric magic that was her debut album, SOUR. Though the Grammy-winner need not worry — her dedicated fans at the gallery were there to remind her in-person how excited they are for her newest collection of songs.

Attendees were able to submit their own questions during the Q+A session, asking in-depth questions about the album production and emotional journey of the recording process. There were also important, hard-hitting investigations like, “What’s your favorite type of Mexican food?” and “Would you dye your hair?” (Olivia's responses: chicken taquitos and bleached-blonde, respectively.)

With a second album now officially under her belt, Rodrigo shared her long-term goals when it comes to crafting a full-length project. “I feel really successful when I can properly capture an emotion that I'm feeling and the song,” she said to Eva Chen. “That's literally all that I want to do in my career. That's all that I set out to achieve. I just want to be able to kind of succinctly express the stuff that's going on in my heart and if I can do that, then I feel like I won a little something.” The pop princess has a skill for articulating powerful emotion, which is arguably the reason her music continues to resonate with such a widely diverse audience.

When asked what advice she has for young listeners who want to chase their dreams, Rodrigo encouraged the fans in the room to make mistakes. “I am a big believer in just taking a step in any direction even if you're not sure where it's gonna lead,” Rodrigo said. “I think the only way you're gonna gain confidence is through experience, and the only way you're gonna figure out who you are in this world is by making a ton of mistakes. I actually think this record was sort of that for me. It was just me grappling with mistakes that I made in my life, things that I wish I didn't do, or things that I thought were really embarrassing but in hindsight it was just me growing from stuff. That is the only way you’ll figure out how you want to be in this world.”

Olivia Rodrigo's GUTS is now available on all digital streaming platforms.
