If you have timbers they’d better be shivering, because we’re just days away from the premiere of Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the iconic pirate manga One Piece, and there’s much information to plunder before we dive in.
Based on Eiichiro Oda’s long-running manga series, which has released more than 106 volumes since its 1997 debut, One Piece follows the adventures of a plucky young pirate crew seeking the world’s most valuable treasure — the fabled “One Piece,” believed to have been stashed away by legendary pirate Gol D. Roger prior to his execution.

And with Oda on board as an executive producer, Netflix has gone to great lengths (and even greater budgets) to bring the East Blue to life, populated by faithfully reimagined versions of the characters that have made this franchise a hit for more than 20 years.
Netflix’s One Piece, which drops its eight-episode first season on Thursday, marks the manga’s first live-action incarnation; an anime series, which began airing in 1999, has already surpassed 1,000 episodes, while several animated movies have also been produced. Much of this content is currently available to stream on Netflix.
Below is a breakdown of just some of the key players you’ll encounter in the East Blue, paired with their counterparts from the anime series for comparison. Once you’ve gotten acquainted, drop a comment with your thoughts on all things One Piece. Will you be setting sail later this week?
Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy
Luffy is the young, enthusiastic leader of the Straw Hat Pirates and aims to someday become King of the Pirates. Luffy’s body is rubbery, thanks to a Devil Fruit he consumed several years earlier, enabling him to stretch great lengths — a party trick that comes especially handy in battle.
Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro
A man of few words, Zoro is a pirate hunter famous for using three swords simultaneously in battle. He is among the more reluctant members of Luffy’s crew, at least initially.
Emily Rudd as Nami
Nami is a thief on a mission: to find the map to the Grand Line, the supposed location of the One Piece. Her dream is to travel the seas and make a map of the whole world.
Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp
The estranged song of a legendary pirate, Usopp has always longed to prove his bravery to the world — and he’s about to get his opportunity.
Taz Skylar as Sanji
Get you a man who can do both! Not only is Sanji a veritable black belt in the kitchen, but the smooth talker can also hold his own in a fight. His dream is to find the All Blue, a legendary body of water that connects the four seas, and feed the world.
Morgan Davies as Koby
Initially working under duress for a wicked pirate captain, Koby’s chance encounter with Luffy allows him to pursue his true dream of joining the Marines. Little does he know, that dream will soon become a nightmare.
Vincent Regan as Vice Admiral Garp
A high-ranking Naval official, this guy is definitely a beard to be feared. (And for anyone unfamiliar with the manga/anime who don’t know Garp’s big secret, buckle up!)
Steven Ward as Mihawk
Even more dangerous than his facial hair would have you believe, this pirate-for-hire is considered to be the world’s greatest swordsman. (Sorry, Zoro!)
Langley Kirkwood as Captain ‘Axe-Hand’ Morgan
They don’t call him “Axe-Hand” for nothing! Captain Morgan, whose hand is quite literally an axe, is a vain Navy Captain who inadvertently helps bring the Straw Hat Crew together in the first place.
Aidan Scott as Helmeppo
The son of Captain Morgan, this entitled brat has all of his father’s bark… but none of his bite.
Peter Gadiot as Shanks
Meet Luffy’s childhood mentor, the man who not only inspired him to become a pirate but also gave him his signature straw hat.
Jeff Ward as Buggy the Clown
If you weren’t already afraid of clowns, this ought to do it. The leader of the Buggy Pirates, this clown-faced lunatic is not to be taken lightly.
Ilia Isorelýs Paulino as Alvida
The leader of the Alvida Pirates, this sea queen becomes Luffy’s first real adversary on his quest to find the One Piece.
McKinley Belcher III as Arlong
The leader of the Arlong Pirates, this terrifying fishman doesn’t suffer fools — or humans.
