If you follow the monarchy at all, then you already know there are some pretty slanted gender-related rules when it comes to royal rules.

We know that despite Princess Charlotte being a princess, her children probably never will receive the same titles, because only children born to male heirs can technically be princes or princesses.

But while the monarchy still has a way to go when it comes to gender equality, Princess Charlotte at least has one thing going for her — she no longer has to worry about her place in line for the British throne. The centuries-old Act of Settlement once allowed brothers to jump ahead of sisters in the line of succession, meaning the birth date of the child didn’t matter if one of the children were female. For example, if a girl was born first, her younger brother could bump her down the list in consideration for the throne.

The Succession to the Crown Act was put in place in 1701, but was assented in April 2013 – just two months before the princess was born – and applies to all royals born after Oct. 28, 2011. The change to this act ended male primogeniture, making Charlotte fourth in line to the throne – behind her grandfather, father and big brother. Her little brother is now fifth in line, while uncle Prince Harry is sixth. This succession can change, however, if Prince George has children, who will then take place ahead of the princess.

Alongside the end of male primogeniture, this change now allows royal family members to marry Roman Catholic and still become king or queen. The update to the act also ditched the rule that forced the first six people in line for the throne to get marriage approval from the current monarch. Both of these changes are great news for Princess Charlotte in the future, surely making dating less intimidating.

Princess Charlotte might have to fight a little harder for her parents’ attention now that she has a little brother, but at least she’ll no longer have to worry about her heir to the British throne.
