There's no new episode of Outlander this week, giving fans of the series a little breathing room to process their grief over fan favorite Murtagh Fitzgibbons's heartbreaking death.

In a major deviation from the book series, Jamie's godfather survived the Battle of Culloden, and served as a leader of the Regulators, a group of settlers who took action against the British government before the Revolutionary War.

But Murtagh couldn't outrun his fate forever. In the episode that aired last Sunday, he was killed during the Battle of Alamance, an altercation between the Regulators and the Red Coats, which some historians see as the spark of the American Revolution. Jamie tried to save him, even getting him to Claire in her make-shift medical tent, but there was no hope; he was too badly wounded.

On Instagram, actor Duncan Lacroix reflected on his character's death, saying the fondest of fond farewells to his character this week.

"Well those of you who have seen episode 7 know that it’s the fondest of fond farewells from yours truly and this guy," he wrote. "My time on Outlander has been magical and I’ll miss mixing it up with the cast and crew. A truly heartfelt thank you for all the messages abut the Ep. And for taking the old coot into your hearts. It’s no cliche to say that you fans make it so special. RIP Murtagh 😘"

Several of his co-stars reacted to the post in the comments—mostly with sad-faced emojis. Sophie Skelton wrote, "Nooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😭😭😭😭," while Sam Heughan left a kind note for Lacroix: "Such a wonderful man, actor and storyteller. What an episode. Cried every time. Miss you bud.x"

But given that Outlander is a story about time travel (and a TV show that judiciously employs flash backs), there's a chance that we haven't seen the last of Murtagh (or of Lacroix). He told Collider that he was optioned for six seasons of the show, and when specifically asked about returning to the show, he simply said, "I don't know about that!"

We're keeping our fingers crossed.

Outlander returns to Starz next Sunday with a new episode.
