It's no secret that Outlander has one of the most passionate and devoted fanbases in all of television. And in a recent interview, star Sam Heughan opened up about the rollercoaster that has been his last seven years on the show.

"[The show] has this great fan base and I was totally unaware when I first got the job," Heughan said on a recent episode of the Just The Facts podcast. "If I had known about the fan base I think I probably would've thought twice because it just would've been so overwhelming."

Heughan went on to emphasize how grateful he is for the show's devoted fanbase. "They're so loyal, we're so thankful that they followed us through this journey," he told host Alex Zane. "They also not only support Outlander but any project we do, any charity, myself and my co-stars do, they support wholeheartedly and honestly we can't thank them enough."

Last year, Heughan spoke out about the more challenging aspects of his popularity, revealing that he'd been subjected to harassment and bullying by a small subset of followers. "After the past 6 years of constant bullying, harassment, stalking and false narrative I am at a loss, upset, hurt and have to speak out. It's affecting my life, mental state and is a daily concern," he wrote in an emotional Twitter post. "My costars, friends, family, myself, in fact anyone I'm associated with, has been subjected to personal slurs, shaming, abuse, death threats, stalking, sharing of private information and vile, false narrative."

The sixth season of Outlander is due to premiere early next year on Starz.
